The Zac Speed Exotec SP-3 armour and hyration pack is one of my favourite riding kit items, and when the race oriented Exotec RP-3 was released, we just had to try it out. Six months into testing, and no suprise, it is awesome too!
At first glance only the most observant would actually notice the difference between the trailrider targetted Exotec SP-3, and its race bred brother, the RP-3.
Both versions share the high end build quality for which Zac Speed are known. From black glass polycarbonate chest shield, through to a pre-curved aticulating back shield, form follows function. I have crash tested the pack on numerous occassions, and have come to think of it as my Gatorade filled version of an crash Air Bag. Very impressive.

At the recent Batemans Bay Apex Trail Ride, EMD crew member Rob had a high speed dive over the bars, whilst wearing the Exotec RP-3. The RP-3 prevented significant injury, and there was no crash damage to the pack! So while providing unsurpassed protection for comparable armour systems, it is also extremely durable and tough. Proof that EMD testers do put their bodies on the line for the reader!
While rider protection is the primary design element in this type of product, it also needs to be comfortable. This holds true for extended riding periods, and for a variety of body shapes and sizes. To be honest, this is where most armour/hydration packs fall down. How many times have you been tempted to leave the hydration behind because its continually fighting with your armour.

Tool free adjustment of the shoulder straps give ample versatility for both the skinny and rotund among us.
The load distribution of the pack is by way of four adjustable straps, which removes the slipping and sliding of traditional armour. At 8.4 Litre in capacity, the pack (including the 3L bladder) is significant in the weight stakes when fully loaded.Though because of the balanced and secure design it is truly barely noticable.
It reminded me of a MacPac daypack I used in Europe years ago. You kind of forget the weight until you carry it by the carry loop, and then realise how good it is. The side straps on the RP-3 come with Sliplocks for added security.

The RP-3 doesn't have the carrying capacity of its bigger brother, nor does it have the awesome tool roll thats included in the SP-3. If your riding a A4DE, removing your helmet and armour to get access to your tool kit really isn't an option. So, in my opinion a bum bag or fender bag is a better tool carrying option in this case. Zac Speed obviously think so too, hence the two purpose specific options.

The RP-3 hydration bladder access is further proof of the well thought out design that only bike riding manufacturers can deliver. The Source "wide pack" opens with a fold and slide mechanism, opening the top of the bladder giving easy quick refilling access. We've been filling ours without even removing the bladder.
The Insulated bladder pocket keeps the fluid cool, while the RP-3 quick access exterior flap is both functional and efficient.

An added bonus on both of the Zac Speed packs is the armourless "back pack only"option. Additional chest straps are supplied to easily convert it to a traditional backpack. This could be used wheen using an armoured enduro jacket, mountain bike riding, or bushwalking.
Honestly the product sells itself, its that good. The only choice is which version. Trailriders are better suited to the SP-3, while racers will appreciate the slimmer RP-3.
