As the sun rose over Hendley Park in Byford, the Wellard Yamaha Junior Development Team set up camp and prepared to do battle on the hard pack circuit situated at the base of the Darling scarp south east of Perth.

With still no sign of rain to quench the W.A landscape, The Lightweight Motorcycle Club had been pouring as much water onto the circuit as they could in an attempt to keep the dust down and provide the best possible racing surface for the riders.

This is the club that will host the next State Championship round so the track was packed with riders all wanting a taste of what was to come in a few weeks.

With all this going on no one could have guessed that the Wellard Yamaha Team would walk away with the biggest haul of silverware they have ever claimed in one meeting.

The day started in good form for Pro team member Daniel Strickland (Five Star Yamaha) who seems to have peaked just at the right time of year. The 250F rider put in three awesome moto’s on his Yamaha to post 4, 1, 1 and collect a bag full of points that saw him standing on the top step of the podium in the 13 to u16 division.

To top things off, the hotshot took out the 3 x 3 lap shoot out feature race at the end of day, becoming the first ever recipient of the clubs new perpetual trophy. “I have been doing a lot of physical off bike training and utilising a lot of Endura products into race day to keep me full of energy and they certainly have been working for me to this point” Daniel said.

Jayden Rykers (Mandurah City Yamaha) was the other Pro team rider to stand on the podium. Since moving up to the big Wheel class, Jayden has never been far away from the front of the pack. Today was no different as the 12 year old had his YZ 85cc bike singing all day long. With a combined class of 12 to u16 Jayden’s third outright is a testament of this young chargers potential for the future. “I got run over in a small crash in race one and have some good tyre tracks up my back. I suppose if I wasn’t laying there they would not have used me as a berm” laughed Jayden.

Pro Team mate Kyle Webster (North City Yamaha) also had a big day in the 85cc Big Wheel class as well. Kyle was on the gas all day chasing down the leaders and strung together three good moto’s, though he just came up short of the top three spots he managed to pick up fourth three points behind his team mate Rykers.

The first of our satellite riders Shaun Cornick (Highway Yamaha) gave the team their fourth podium in the 125cc division. Shaun who picked up his ride after a good performance at the Nationals has been a consistent place getter so far this year and with a 2, 2, 2 in each race, yep you guessed it placed second outright for the day.

Another 125cc satellite rider in Jonty Thomas lifted a notch on the day as well. Jonty is a good hard pack rider who again is always in contention of placing at any meeting. Today was one of those days as he rode the wheels off his YZ in all three races for a well earned third placing.

Our satellite Small Wheel 85cc rider Toby Mayne brought the team its sixth podium placing by winning all his division races. This being  his home track gave the young charger a good knowledge of the circuit and the best way of getting around it quicker than his competitors. With a 1, 1, 1, Toby had a grin from ear to ear as he was handed the first place trophy.

Not to be out done by any of his fellow team mates our youngest 85cc Small Wheel rider ten year old Jayden Fabry set about joining the podium party. Jayden kept his YZ 85cc bike on two wheels and wound up for all three races, managing to collect enough points for third outright in his class.

“Today has been one of those freaky days where everything just goes well for the team. We made it onto the box at least once in every class that Yamaha makes a bike. Our Satellite riders pulled out all the stops and our Pro team did their job. The depth and talent of this years team is unbelievable  and is the reason we can achieve results like this” commented a very happy Team Manager Peter Strickland.
