Reekie rules Australian Supermoto with sixth national title for KTM

KTM Racing’s Angus Reekie claimed a record sixth Australian Supermoto Championship at Phillip Island’s final round of the 2011 season in Victoria on 18-19 November.

Reekie, 24, rode his 450 SMR to the national title, taking the victory just two weeks after winning the Australian Pro-Thunder Championship in road racing aboard the KTM 1190 RC8R superbike.

One of the nation’s most versatile racers, Reekie finished second overall at the final round after scoring 1-DNF-1-1 results at Phillip Island. His DNF came due to a crash while running second in the second outing of the weekend.

The result was good enough to take home a sixth title in the Supermoto ranks, which is a hybrid sport where competitors do battle on both road and dirt within the single event.

Last weekend’s finale was contested on the Phillip Island Go Kart track, a 720-metre scale replica of the world famous grand prix circuit on the southern coast of Victoria.

“It was a really good result because we went down there expecting to do what we always do, but the track was quite difficult,” Reekie explained. “It’s great to win another title for KTM and hopefully we can get another one next year.

“My road race experience on the RC8R has been a huge help when I switch back to Supermoto. It’s made me heaps faster and so much more comfortable on the asphalt sections of the circuit. I really have to thank all involved for helping me this season.”
